In our research we investigated the characteristics of existing retirement homes and their residents in Miyazaki and Oita prefectures. Data were collected from retirement homes from both prefectures which is available on the official website responses and from responses to a questionnaire distributed at 270 retirement homes. The response rate from questionnaires was 33.7% (91 homes). Our results indicated that retirement homes built after 2006 accounted for 82.2% of retirement homes. Building retirement homes have expanded quickly during the past five years. Rents in urban areas for housing were expensive in comparison with the rural areas. However, the housing in urban areas were locations favorably situated for city services; whereas the rural areas houses, though less expensive, were not well situated for access to services. Elderly individuals who needed only light care and those who needed a high level of care lived in same retirement homes. The majority of residents who had moved to the retirement home from their own house had been living alone but were concerned personal safety. Common reasons for leaving retirement housing were serious illness and death.}, pages = {13--23}, title = {都市規模の違いからみた住宅型有料老人ホームの設置状況と入居者特性}, volume = {14}, year = {2013}, yomi = {サンノミヤ, モトヒロ and スズキ, ヨシヒロ and ファン, ビョンジュン} }
